Instrumentation Assessment
New applications or reuse of radiological instrumentation requires that the instruments be tested to verify performance. The health physics experts at Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) have conducted extensive operational evaluations of specialized instrumentation.
For example, Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)-licensed facilities increasingly want to deploy in situ gamma spectroscopy systems as part of the post-remediation measurements to confirm decontamination. ORAU is investigating and evaluating the issues that arise when these systems are used like this, particularly for the analysis of soil.
We are also well versed with the current crop of radiological instruments described in the DHS/ANSI N42 series of standards, including:
- radionuclide identifiers (RIDS).
- portable survey meters.
- personnel monitoring devices.
- portal monitors.
Project Highlight
Homeland Defense Equipment Reuse (HDER) Program (pdf)
ORAU employees have been instrumental in getting the U.S. Department of Energy's surplus radiation detection equipment assembled, evaluated, and delivered to first responders across the nation. ORAU also developed a training CD to accompany the equipment.
