Cytogenetic Biodosimetry Laboratory

Oak Ridge Associated Universities' (ORAU) primary mission with its cytogenetic biodosimetry laboratory is to provide a critical resource to our nation in the event of mass casualties involving radiological/nuclear materials.

Cytogenetic biodosimetry is a proven technique for calculating the radiation doses to those exposed to high levels. This exposure information is crucial to effectively treating patients and managing medical resources during an emergency.

However, this technique also can offer insight into occupational and environmental exposures to radiation as well. With a simple blood test, ORAU researchers can help determine the potential for biological effects induced by radiation.

Chromosomes can reveal information about a person's radiation exposure.ORAU's scientists use specialized equipment to examine human lymphocytes that have been exposed to ionizing radiation. This allows them to identify the structurally abnormal chromosomes that will appear in cell divisions after exposure.

Only one other laboratory can provide such a service in the United States —the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute in Bethesda, Md. However their resources are dedicated to military applications of the technology.

ORAU's researchers are also focused on improving the accuracy and speed of cytogenetic analytical methods. Several new methods as well as equipment modifications show promise for decreasing the process and analysis time.
