The number of U.S. students seeking science and engineering degrees is not keeping up with our nation's scientific workforce needs. How can federal research facilities build a pipeline of employees for the future so that world-class research can continue?
Let the science sell itself … with a little matchmaking from Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU).
For decades, ORAU has recruited students and recent graduates to pursue degrees and conduct research in disciplines of interest to federal agencies with science research missions. We have helped direct the educational paths and research careers of more than 35,000 individuals through:
- graduate fellowships
- undergraduate scholarships
- postgraduate internships
- postdoctoral research appointments
- faculty research programs
- other science education programs
We have mastered the art of matching the applicants' skills and interests with the research needs and goals of federal agencies, particularly with their national laboratories and research centers.
The FY07 results?
- Almost 5,000 participants were supported in programs that helped focus their careers or encouraged them to pursue degrees in areas of critical national need, including:
- 1290 undergraduate students
- 652 graduate students
- 862 recent graduates
- 982 postdoctoral fellows
- 274 faculty
- 817 K-12 students and teachers
- 73 other scientists
- Diversity of the science and engineering workforce pipeline was increased
