Project Highlight: Mentor Orientation Program
Having a good mentor is crucial to a successful research participation experience. Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) knows this from its 60 years of experience in matching research participants with mentors.
To prepare mentors for their role, an ORAU team of education program experts and training development specialists created a Web-based mentor orientation program. In 30 minutes or less, a mentor experiences interactive learning activities that include:
- quotes from mentors and students
- practical advice and tips
- links to additional resources
- printable checklists
- activities and quiz
Topics cover the full range of mentor activities:
- Deciding to host a participant
- Identifying an appropriate project
- Selecting the best person for your project
- Preparing to host your participant
- Orienting your participant on the first day
- Providing a quality experience
- Preventing and solving problems
Mentors completing the program can print a completion certificate. Coordinators of various mentorship programs receive an e-mail notification to track which future mentors have taken the training.
This efficient method for training mentors is a win-win for both the mentors and education program administrators.
