ORAU’s Education Partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) has been working with ORNL since 1946, but this innovative partnership has evolved into something unique. ORAU is involved with ORNL in its planning and recruitment to meet the lab’s future workforce needs.

Department of Homeland Security Scholarship and Fellowship Program
When this new agency needed to quickly establish its scholarship and fellowship program, ORAU was able to step in and implement a fully functioning program in record time.

Online Mentor Orientation
Based on years of training the scientists who serve as mentors in research participation programs, ORAU has developed a Web-based training course that does the job in 30 minutes or less.

NASA Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
ORAU earned the right to administer this highly visible, national postdoctoral fellowship program through a competitive bid. It is an important component of ORAU's menu of activities designed to encourage recent Ph.D. recipients to pursue careers in areas of national importance.

U.S. Army Programs
ORAU celebrated the placement of its 1000th participant in the U.S. Army Environmental Center Participant Program.

Cecilia Serrano

A Success Story

Cecilia Serrano of National Hispanic University (NHU) spent a summer at a Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence doing research on how certain bacteria can be used to deliberately contaminate food. Her research experience has allowed her to initiate a research program at NHU, which had no such programs before.

Says Serrano, "It is now realistic to think that all of our science majors can have meaningful research experiences throughout their undergraduate training. For students, most of whom are the first in their family to attend college, and for whom the dream of college would be no more than a dream were it not for NHU, this is a very significant educational approach."
