Science Education Partnership
With a solid relationship built between Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) and UT-Battelle comes a strong partnership between the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). ORISE, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) institute managed by ORAU, and ORNL share complementary missions—to advance science and education.
As ORISE has invested in cultivating the next generation of scientists, engineers and other talented professionals from our nation’s academic institutions and beyond, ORNL has invested in leadership-class facilities that provide a fertile bed for advances in research and new scientific and technological discoveries.
Through this ORISE/ORNL partnership that represents nearly six decades of cooperation, a variety of productive collaborations have provided educational opportunities for faculty members, students, and recent graduates at ORNL in the form of science education and research participation programs that support ORNL’s science and technology mission.
From DOE-funded appointments to numerous ORNL internally funded programs and other appointments supported by federal agencies such as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, ORISE has cooperated with ORNL to design, implement and administer robust science education programs that serve the emerging needs of both the academic and laboratory research communities.
During the course of FY 2005, ORISE administered a total of 26 different research participation programs on behalf of ORNL, programs that served 755 participants from nearly 200 U.S. and more than 50 foreign colleges and universities. These included programs for pre-college students and teachers, as well as research opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students, postgraduates, faculty members, and faculty/student teams.
