Lemanski Elected to ORAU Board of Directors
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Larry F. Lemanski, the vice president for research and graduate studies at Florida Atlantic University, was elected to the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) Board of Directors at the 59th annual meeting of the ORAU Council of Sponsoring Institutions held in Washington, D.C. The board provides policy and fiduciary oversight of ORAU operations for its membership.
Previously serving from 2000 to 2003, Lemanski is a second-term board member. He accepted his current position at FAU in 2001. Under his leadership, FAU exceeded $50 million in research expenditures for the first time in 2003.
“From my perspective of working closely with outstanding research faculty and students at Florida Atlantic University, I am aware of the extremely important role that ORAU plays in advancing major national research initiatives,” Lemanski said. “Thus, I was delighted to learn of my election to a second term on the ORAU Board of Directors and look forward to working with the other board members, councilors and ORAU staff to help shape the organization’s future outstanding contributions in support of science, service and education.”
Lemanski recently oversaw the establishment of a Center of Excellence for Biomedical and Marine Biotechnology through a $10 million grant from Florida’s Emerging Technology Commission. In addition, under his supervision, the Division of Research and Graduate Studies established a new Center for Intermodal Transportation that has received $7 million in first-year federal funding.
Lemanski serves as president and chair of the FAU Research Corporation and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Florida Research Consortium. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Lemanski holds teaching and research duties at FAU as a professor of biomedical sciences, biology, and chemistry.
Florida’s Gov. Jeb Bush recently named Lemanski to the Board of Directors of the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, a research institute developing computational aids designed to amplify human cognitive and perceptual abilities.
Lemanski holds a doctorate and a master’s degree in zoology from Arizona State University. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Wisconsin, Platteville.
Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) is a university consortium leveraging the scientific strength of 91 major research institutions to advance science and education by partnering with national laboratories, government agencies, and private industry. ORAU manages the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for the U.S. Department of Energy.
