ORAU Employee Selected as Fellow of Health Physics Society
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. —Nancy M. Daugherty, a quality assurance manager for Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), was recently named a fellow of the national Health Physics Society (HPS) at the group’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C. This honor is given by the society to senior members who have made exceptional administrative, educational, and/or scientific contributions to the health physics profession.
Daugherty is being awarded for her long-time support to the HPS, most recently through ORAU and its work with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). She has served as a life scientist for ORAU, providing scientific and technical support in conducting medical surveillance and neutron dose reconstruction for former radiation workers of the Department of Energy (DOE) Rocky Flats, Colo., facility.
Daugherty is currently the Project Quality Assurance Manager for the ORAU Team Dose Reconstruction Project for NIOSH. She has been certified by the American Board of Health Physics for nearly 23 years. She served as a director of the national HPS from 1997-2000 and as secretary-elect and secretary from 2000-2003. She also has worked on several national and chapter HPS committees.
“I have enormous respect for the integrity and professionalism of the society and for the significant contributions that its members make to the science and practice of radiation safety,” Daugherty said. “To be named a fellow of the HPS is an added benefit to a membership that I’ve enjoyed for more than 27 years.”
Although Daugherty is the one being awarded, she is quick to note that the honor is a shared one. “I appreciate the time, effort, and initiative of those health physicists who nominated and supported my selection and with whom I’ve worked for many years,” she said.
