Full-time one-year appointments are renewable up to three years; postdoc appointments are renewable up to four years. Students can participate fulltime or parttime as long as they meet eligibility requirements. Appointments for students can be during the summer or winter breaks, or during the academicic year.

Applied Physics Laboratory (APL)

The Research Participation Program for the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) provides opportunities to participate in APL's on-going and applied research and development projects. The Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is a not-for-profit center for engineering, research and development. APL is a division of one of the world's premier research universities, Johns Hopkins. The 399-acre campus, 20 miles north of Washington, DC, is home to 4,100 men and women.  The Laboratory has been a major asset to the nation since it was organized to help the war effort in 1942, four months after Pearl Harbor. Projects consist of more than 400 programs that protect our homeland and advance the nation's vision in research and space science. Project areas disciplines include Engineering, Physics, Nanotechnology, Chemistry, Material Science and more. APL accepts applications on a continuous basis.
