Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a science and technology laboratory managed for the U.S. Department of Energy by the University of Tennessee (UT) and Battelle.

ORAU works with UT-Battelle to develop, support, and endorse partnerships with ORNL. Together with academic institutions and universities across the United States, ORAU enhances and expands scientific research and education, and encourages teacher and student participation at the laboratory.

ORAU recognizes that partnerships between our member institutions and ORNL are mutually beneficial. With access to world-class facilities at ORNL, faculty members are better able to realize their research goals. By drawing on the intellectual resources that reside at America’s colleges and universities, the national lab is better able to achieve its scientific objectives. The collaborative research initiatives pursued by ORAU with ORNL fortify the future of science at ORNL, which, in turn, strengthens America’s competitiveness in science and technology.

ORAU and ORNL have developed and are continuing to build projects around the following subject areas:

  • Neutrino physics studies, including Spallation Neutron Source
  • Neutron science
  • Nuclear physics
  • Biology
  • Biomedicine
  • Advanced materials
  • Advanced computation
  • Environmental science and technology
  • Energy
  • Student and faculty programs
