The diagnostic-level whole-body counter was developed and put into operation in the Medical Division in late 1964. The whole-body counter continues to be housed in a low-background 60-ton steel box within the Medical Division.
For the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Medical Division began in 1964 an exhaustive study of patients and accident victims who had received whole body radiation.
