ORAU staff conducted eight pandemic flu exercises at U.S. international airports and land-locked ports of entry. More than 600 representatives from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, quarantine stations, hospitals, airlines, and airport authorities walked through how they would respond if arriving overseas airline passengers had worsening symptoms of the flu.
Work by ORAU's radiochemistry laboratory helped the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to maintain public safety and trust. Staff analyzed more than 700 water samples plus soil, vegetation, and fish samples from 13 U.S. nuclear power reactors thought to have inadvertently released tritium into the surrounding groundwater.
ORAU completed 17,000 dose reconstruction reports on former energy workers who developed cancers that may have been due to work-related radiation exposures. These workers may be eligible for benefits under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act.
ORAU provided free medical screenings of more than 1,800 former Department of Energy (DOE) workers in the first full year of the DOE National Supplemental Screening Program. This program identifies former site employees who may have been exposed to hazardous substances at work.
