Situation Awareness

Our goal is to maximaze human performance effectiveness while minimizing human performance costs in complex systems and environments. Technological advancements, such as unmanned systems, information networks, and advanced sensor suites, are intended as means to enhance operational performance. However, the implications of these technologies for human use are not always fully appreciated nor are they always considered during design. Our goal of maximizing Soldier effectieness can be accomplished by developing state-of-the-art Soldier-system interactions that minimize the sensory, cognitive, and physical demands on an individual. We seek to identify tools, techniques, and measures that can be used to improve and assess performance in complex systems and environments. Specific issues to be addressed include: unmanned and manned vehichle mobility, interface solutions, supervisory control, situation awareness and workload management.
