"NO PASS, NO PLAY" POLICY PARENTS AND BOYS CLUB
STUDENT ATHLETES: Please read carefully
the following Boys Club of Oak Ridge Athletic Academic Policy. All student
athletes will be required to meet this policy for participation in Boys Club
athletics.
* * * * Oak Ridge Boys Club
Special Programs requires mandatory tutoring classes for students in Boys
Club athletics who make an “F” in any subject area at the midterm of each
nine weeks. Rather than eliminate a student’s participation in Boys Club
athletics, we wish to provide assistance for students having difficulty. We
do not want to punish students by taking athletics away from them, but
instead, we want students to continue in athletics by providing tutoring
during the season. This will give students the assistance they need for
academic improvement and will keep them in Boys Club athletics. However, if
a student is failing at the end of the nine-week period he will be removed
from the sport until his effort in his academics has improved. This
improvement will be evaluated at the midterm of the following grading
period.
Mandatory tutoring sessions
will follow the Oak Ridge Schools schedule and will meet in the afternoon
from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at
the Boys Club of Oak Ridge. Tutoring will be open to both boys and girls
concentrating on grades 4 through 9. Students must sign in and attend three
out of four sessions offered each week. Absences from tutoring sessions
will be excused or unexcused according to the procedures of the Boys Club of
Oak Ridge Special Programs Committee. On each of the first two unexcused
absences the Boys Club Special Programs Committee will be responsible for
the intervention. Upon the third unexcused absence the student will not be
allowed to participate in Boys Club of Oak Ridge athletics for the remainder
of the current grading period. There is a zero tolerance
for discipline problems in the tutoring sessions. Any discipline problems
will cause removal of the student from the tutoring session and will result
in an unexcused absence for that session which cannot be made up by
attending another session. Students who are enrolled in the mandatory tutoring sessions are required to attend tutoring the entire nine-week grading period. At the end of the grading period, if the student is failing a subject(s), he will then be removed from the sport in which he is participating. The effort displayed in tutoring by the student will be taken into consideration. If a student improves his grade(s) to passing at the end of the nine-weeks, he will not be required to attend tutoring sessions for the next grading period and he will be reinstated in the sport. However, students can choose to continue attending the tutoring services. The staff for the tutoring
sessions will include a combination of peer tutoring and volunteer
tutoring. Peer tutoring includes students from the National Honor Society,
Scholars Bowl, and various advanced academic classes. Volunteering includes
PTA personnel, parents, Partners-In-Education, and community leaders. It is the intention of the Boys Club Special Programs Committee to encourage students to participate in Boys Club athletics and to give students tutoring assistance if they have difficulty with their grades. It is our belief that the students who are involved in athletics will be higher achievers and better behaved students. |
