Audit Services for Radiological Facilities
Does your facility possess, handle, store, process, or transport radioactive materials? Or do you think you have a good radiological control program, but would appreciate an external audit to verify that?
These statements cover a lot of territory. The health physicists at Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) are here to assist you in either case. Our audits are designed to confirm your facility has an adequate radiological control program in place to:
- receive radioactive materials safely and
- meet applicable state and/or federal regulatory limits.
Our long-term involvement and experience working with federal and state agencies is readily utilized when conducting these audits.
When Would You Need a Facility Audit?
- You may be a waste processing facility seeking work with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). You would need to be approved to accept DOE radiological materials.
- Or your procedures may mandate an external audit every three years or so.
In 2002, ORAU became actively involved in auditing radiological control and environmental compliance programs at multiple sites across the country for DOE's Consolidated Audit Program, (DOECAP) and Office of Environmental Management (DOE EM) programs.
We use DOE-approved auditors who conduct radiological control audits of treatment storage and disposal (TSDF) and other facilities for the DOE. We also take the lead in coordinating and conducting these facility audits as requested.
What Do We Provide?
For externally driven audits, we provide a complete assessment of your radiological control program based on your needs. We also offer recommendations to improve that program.
When our staff conducts external audits of DOE EM and DOECAP audits, we evaluate the facility carefully using a DOE-approved protocol. This allows us to assess the facility’s compliance with DOE requirements and prepare a report listing proficiencies, findings, and observations as they are encountered.
