Science Education Events
Shorter-term events such as meetings, conferences, or competitions can also help to stimulate students’ interest in scientific fields. Such programs foster collaboration and networking with top researchers. They can also increase awareness of types of scientific careers, applications of research, and the extensive kinds of research being conducted at your facilities.
Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) is experienced in managing high-profile local and national education initiatives. We arrange first-class events that offer participants unique opportunities to explore their interests in science.
Examples include:
Annual Meeting of Nobel Laureates and Students in Lindau, Germany (Science): An elite group of U.S. graduate science students draw upon the knowledge of Nobel Laureates in chemistry, physics, physiology, or medicine through lectures, informal roundtable luncheons, and evening social events.
Bi-Annual Lindau Meeting in Economic Sciences: A group of U.S. graduate students in economics meet with the winners of the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for formal lectures as well as smaller, informal sessions with the laureates.
Appalachian Regional Commission/Oak Ridge National Laboratory Summer Institute: High school educators and students from small, rural towns in Appalachia participate in this annual two-week, residential, hands-on program that focuses on the application of mathematical and scientific principles.
Tennessee Science Bowl: Students from across the state compete in this annual event sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Operations Office and other local businesses. The winning team receives an all-expenses-paid trip to compete in the National Science Bowl held in Washington, D.C.
National Science Bowl®: In this highly visible educational event and academic competition, teams of high school students attend science seminars and compete in a verbal forum to solve technical problems and answer questions in all branches of science and math. This encourages student involvement in math and science activities, improves awareness of career options in science and technology, and provides an avenue of enrichment and reward for academic science achievement.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory Day of Science: Each year, students eligible to apply for research participation programs at Oak Ridge National Laboratory are invited to the lab for a day. This gives them a chance to meet the scientists and learn about the research projects that they may apply for through ORAU.
