Communications Specialist 2

PURPOSE:  To develop communication or marketing-oriented material for both print and electronic distribution (web); to develop and maintain internet sites; and research and write articles, press releases, crisis information, etc. to support Professional and Technical Training (PTT) projects.  
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
 
*  Serves as project coordinator for project communication efforts; researches, writes, and organizes information; coordinates production (photography, design, and printing); and manages budgets where applicable.
 
*  Develops and creates web pages for organization/customer internet sites.  Includes writing and organizing content; developing information architecture; working with Information Services Department (ISD)/federal agency personnel on server requirements; working with graphic artists to prepare look and feel of sites; populating sites based on approved plans.  Supports web maintenance efforts.
 
*  Supports public communications efforts by writing appropriate communications for news media, Web, feature publications and advising customers on communications issues.
 
*  Edits documents for grammar and style.
 
OTHER JOB DUTIES:
 
*  Supports program activities in event coordination, marketing and advertising.

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Health Sciences, or related field and a minimum of two to four years job related experience required.  Requires in-depth knowledge of communications theories and practices, especially those related to writing (creative, technical and Web), editing, and document development.  Must have knowledge of public information/public relations field and ability to write press releases, Web updates, etc. for crisis communications.  Must have demonstrated writing and editing skills.  Must be familiar with all forms of media (print, broadcast, and Web).  Must be able to communicate information clearly using Plain Language guidelines.  Must be proficient in and understand various electronic communication venues (e-mail, listservs, etc.) and must be familiar with new and evolving technology related to the Internet and intranets.  Must have knowledge of writing for electronic media and Web sites.  Must be proficient in word processing, electronic mail, Internet browsers, and spreadsheet softwares.  Must have experience in: (1) writing for various media outlets; (2) public information/public relations:  writing press releases, articles, reports, speeches, etc.; (3) developing, writing, and organizing information for the Web, including preparing information for posting in HTML or other appropriate formats; (4) occasionally working in a fast-paced production environment in crisis situations; 5) coordinating a team to accomplish projects; (6) performing edits, verifying facts, and interacting with a variety of customers.   Moderate travel required.
