Siemens Teachers as Researchers (STARs)

Brief description:

Have you ever wanted to be part of scientific research team?  Have you ever wanted to bring the excitement of authentic research into the classroom? 

Siemens teachers as Researchers (STARs) will provide the experience, resources, and contacts you need to do just that!  Siemens Teachers as Researchers is a two-week, residential professional development program, all expenses paid*, in which teachers will engage in mentored research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn., or at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash. 

STARs provides middle school and high school STEM teachers the opportunity to engage with top scientists and researchers on short-term research projects about current topics of national interest that are related to ongoing research at the laboratory.

Eligibility:
  • Employed as a full-time teacher in the 2011-2012 school year and intend to continue teaching in the 2012-2013 school year
  • Teach science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) courses
  • Teach any or a combination of grades 6 through 12
  • Hold current state teaching certification in middle school and/or high school science, technology, engineering or mathematics
  • Have a strong academic background in science, technology, engineering or mathematics
  • Have a strong desire to improve teaching and learning in the classroom through research and inquiry-based instruction
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or a Permanent Resident Alien

Features:

Selected teachers will receive:

  • Paid travel (purchased roundtrip airline flights or up to $500 round-trip mileage reimbursement)
  • Paid lodging – double occupancy housing at a local hotel
  • Paid meals
  • Paid entrance fees for field trips and cultural activities
  • $300 stipend
  • $500 mini-grant to purchase equipment and/or supplies for the classroom
