Partnerships for Innovation

Developing tools that allow our customers to receive public health information and training in an interesting and interactive fashion is a building block to better patient diagnosis.
Known for its expertise in multimedia applications and instructional design and development, Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) was called upon by the National Cancer Institute to develop a training tool for clinical staff responsible for screening patients for breast, cervical, or colon cancer.
CancerSPACE (Cancer: Simulated Planned Approach to the Collaborative Experience) is an immersive training experience that helps optimize cancer screening and care delivery for Health Resources and Services Administration-supported health centers.
Through a virtual 3-D community clinic, the CancerSPACE team players are guided by avatars, or graphical representations of people, while working together to improve cancer screening, follow-up, management and patient-provider communication.
CancerSPACE scores the simulated health center’s current situation, giving participants the opportunity to improve standing by taking steps that improve their screening program.
While development of CancerSPACE is still underway, a demonstration version is now available for download. The complete version is scheduled for release in Fall 2009.
