Building Relationships and Creating Opportunities with one of the World’s Premier Laboratories —
Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Introduction

The Annual Meeting of the Council of Sponsoring Institutions will be held February 24-26, 2009, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. In conjunction with the annual meeting, ORAU and ORNL will host a workshop on Building Relationships and Creating Opportunities with ORNL.

Invitation to Attend

The business session of the Annual Council Meeting will be on Tuesday afternoon, February 24.  The session will include reports on the State of ORAU, elections to the Board of Directors, and applications for membership in the consortium. Wayne Stevenson, Vice President for Science Education Programs, will give an overview of research programs available for faculty and graduate students.  The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and more than a dozen other federal agencies rely on the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) to help recruit and train the future workforce of scientists and engineers. Through ORISE-administered internship, scholarship, fellowship, and research appointment programs, these agencies are creating a pipeline of potential employees for the science workforce.  Opportunities at ORNL will be featured.

Attendance by the ORAU Councilor, as the institutional representative, is necessary to conduct the business of ORAU, Inc. during the meeting.  In the event the ORAU Councilor cannot attend the meeting, another designated representative from your institution, another member of the Council, or a member of the Board of Directors may vote on behalf of your institution. Proxies shall be valid only for this meeting, and will be automatically revoked if the Council member attends the meeting.  You may indicate your proxy when you register for the meeting.  The deadline for registration is Friday, February 6, 2009.

In conjunction with the ORAU Annual Meeting, ORAU will host a workshop on Building Relationships and Creating Opportunities with ORNL.  The meeting will provide a focused opportunity for chief research officers to understand how the modernization of user facilities at ORNL has created enhanced opportunities for collaboration.  We are also planning sessions for graduate students and faculty to learn more about the exciting scientific initiatives at ORNL. The lab is an international leader in a range of scientific areas that support the Department of Energy’s mission. ORNL has six major mission roles: neutron science, energy, high-performance computing, systems biology, materials science at the nanoscale, and national security. Having modernized the lab with $2 billion in new facilities, the task now is to produce the kind of science that will literally change our future.  Learn how you can be part of this endeavor.

Complimentary hotel rooms (room and tax only) are available for the first 50 registrants for this event at the Doubletree Hotel in Oak Ridge.
