Woods Elected to ORAU Board of Directors

OAK RIDGE, Tenn.— Clifton Woods, vice chancellor for research at the University of Tennessee, was elected to the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) Board of Directors at the 59th annual meeting of the ORAU Council of Sponsoring Institutions held in Washington, D.C. The board provides policy and fiduciary oversight of ORAU operations for its membership.

As a researcher, Woods is involved in the synthesis and characterization of platinum and copper complexes by the use of the conventional techniques, including infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, as well as X-ray crystallography. This research explores the role of copper complexes in the body, which can include anti-inflammatory and antitumor effects.

Prior to accepting his present position in 2001, Woods served UT in a variety of administrative and research roles, including: professor, Department of Chemistry; associate dean for research and resource development, College of Arts and Sciences; vice provost for faculty affairs; and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. He is also active in UT-Battelle’s management of Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Woods holds a Ph.D. and master’s degree in chemistry from North Carolina State University. He earned a bachelor’s degree with majors in chemistry and mathematics from North Carolina Central University in 1966.
