Vitkus Resumes Position as Survey Projects Manager for ORAU’s Environmental Assessment Programs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 9, 2008
FY08-25

OAK RIDGE, Tenn.—Timothy "Tim" Vitkus recently resumed the position of survey projects manager for Oak Ridge Associated Universities’ (ORAU) Independent Environmental Assessment and Verification programs. Vitkus had previously served as survey projects manager from 1996 to 2005 and had then been assigned to lead a three-year decommissioning project at Defense National Stockpile Center sites in Curtis Bay, Md., and Hammond, Ind., which was completed in 2007.

As survey projects manager, Vitkus will be responsible for managing a team of health physicists and survey technicians who perform radiological surveys to verify the remediation efforts at decontamination and decommissioning projects across the United States. Vitkus will also work to continuously improve the organization’s survey procedures and optimize the technical application of survey instrumentation.

Vitkus joined ORAU in 1990 as a project leader whose responsibilities included planning, implementing and managing radiological surveys, as well as developing the organization’s chemical sampling capabilities. He later served as senior project leader and in addition to his extensive involvement with radiological investigations at numerous sites throughout the U.S., Vitkus also provided technical oversight for complex site characterization activities and support to the Special Exposure Cohort task for the NIOSH Dose Reconstruction project.

Vitkus, a certified health physicist with the American Board of Health Physics, earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Emory University and a master’s degree in applied and environmental microbiology from Georgia State University—both located in Atlanta, Ga.

Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) is a university consortium leveraging the scientific strength of 97 major research institutions to advance science and education by partnering with national laboratories, government agencies, and private industry. ORAU manages the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for the U.S. Department of Energy.
