OAK RIDGE, Tenn.—Even while the state of the economy is a major source of concern, ORAU employees made a strong statement about their commitment to the community—by giving the largest amount of money to United Way and Community Shares in ORAU’s campaign participation history.
Although the total ORAU employee giving participation percentage was 87 percent for 2008 as compared with 91 percent last year, the total amount given increased by more than 6 percent, from $82,368.05 to $87,831.81. The employee contributions combined with the corporate donation of $15,000, brought this year’s ORAU giving total to $102,952.81, marking the first time ORAU’s contribution has exceeded $100,000.
Employees who participated in the campaign were invited to a closeout celebration on Wed., Oct. 29, in the Pollard Technology Conference Center lobby, in which raffle prizes were given away. The event was made available via Webcast to ORAU off-site employees, as well.
“How humbling and gratifying it is to see what ORAU has done this year,” said ORAU President Dr. Ron Townsend. He added that the tough economic times make setting this record for giving all the more “remarkable.”
Referencing this year’s campaign slogan, ORAU United Way /Community Shares Campaign Chairman Archie Smart said that the increase in giving by ORAU employees “was evidence that even in the midst of a financial downturn, they decided that they would ‘Give United…Live United.’”
