KNOXVILLE, Tenn.—Oak Ridge Associated Universities awarded fifth-grade A. L. Lotts Elementary School Teacher Karla Fultz a $1,000 grant for the purchase of classroom technology after she became the first-ever winner of the Viewers’ Choice award in the 2011 ORAU Extreme Classroom Makeover competition.

Contestants entering ORAU’s competition are required to meet specific criteria. They must teach math or science for 5th-8th grade and work for a public school located within 50 miles of Oak Ridge. Additionally, a teacher must submit a short video illustrating the classroom’s need and explain how the new technologies would be used to energize and enhance learning.

Last week, ORAU announced Herman Sutton of Green Magnet Math and Science Academy as the 2011 Extreme Classroom Makeover grand-prize winner. Sutton received a $25,000 grant to use toward the purchase of technology for his classroom.

While the grand-prize winner and two runners-up were chosen by the ORAU board of directors, this year was the first time the competition was extended to allow the public to vote on their favorite video. Fultz won the Viewers’ Choice award with 3,429 votes.
