ORAU achieves ISO 9001:2015 registration for quality management systems

Oak Ridge-based non-profit an early adopter of the new standard

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dec. 12, 2016

OAK RIDGE, Tenn.—ORAU has received the ISO 9001:2015 registration, the latest international standard from the International Organization for Standardization for validating quality management systems. To demonstrate a commitment to meeting customer requirements, ORAU transitioned to the new version despite it not being mandatory until September 2018.

“Transitioning to ISO 9001:2015 is a significant accomplishment for our company,” said ORAU president and CEO Andy Page. “We have further elevated our commitment to quality, while providing our customers with even more confidence in ORAU by implementing a quality management system that consistently and continuously improves our performance in meeting contract requirements.”

As part of a family of standards overseen by this international organization, ISO 9001:2015 identifies or details the criteria for a company’s quality management system, and includes a strong customer focus, involvement of top management and a process for continuous improvement.

Attaining ISO 9001:2015 involved a rigorous self-evaluation process undertaken over the course of two years during which ORAU fully assessed its quality system and procedures. The company’s work was then validated through an audit conducted by an external, accredited organization.

In his audit report, the ISO 9001 auditor commented that, “The ORAU Quality Management System is the most thoroughly implemented ISO program I have seen. The strength of the program is in the leadership of the business and the management's commitment to the ISO requirements.”

To maintain its certification, ORAU has committed to continuously assess its quality management systems and processes and undergo follow-up audits annually.

ORAU first became ISO 9001 registered under the 2008 version in January 2014. Also part of this family of international standards is ISO 14001:2004, which establishes the criteria for a company’s environmental management system. ORAU attained ISO 14001:2004 certification in 2005. The ISO standards are recognized in nearly 200 countries around the world.
