ORAU Officially Established 60 Years Ago
On October 17, 1946, representatives from leading southern universities met in Oak Ridge to officially organize the Oak Ridge Institute for Nuclear Studies (ORINS), which later became known as Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU).
Among other things, ORINS was originally established to stimulate collaboration between universities, other agencies and the government for research at Clinton Engineer Works (today known as Oak Ridge National Laboratory) in the field of atomic energy.
To learn more about ORAU's beginnings, read the 1946 newspaper article, detailing the first meeting to organize ORINS. The ORAU chronology also lists highlights in the organization's history.
