ORAU Officially Established 60 Years Ago
On October 17, 1946, representatives from leading southern universities met in Oak Ridge to officially organize the Oak Ridge Institute for Nuclear Studies (ORINS), which later became known as Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU).

ORAU Kicks Off Annual Giving Campaign
ORAU employees gathered on Oct. 17 to kick off the company’s 2006 Giving Campaign for United Way and Community Shares. This year’s drive, themed “60 Years of Giving and Caring,” highlights individual ORAU employee volunteer efforts for various community programs and also recognizes ORAU’s 60th anniversary.

Consortium Members Receive NSF Partnership Awards To Enhance Materials Research
The National Science Foundation (NSF) announced awards for six new Partnerships for Research and Education in Materials (PREMs). Four ORAU members schools were among the recipients, and one is a partner. The partnerships are designed to link minority-serving institutions with centers and facilities funded by NSF’s Division of Materials Research.

ORAU and Alabama A&M Co-Sponsor Nobel Laureate Lecture
MIT Physics Professor Frank Wilczek will present "The Universe is a Strange Place" on Oct. 20 at Alabama A&M. He will also sign copies of his book, "Fantastic Realities." Wilczek, along with two of his colleagues, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2004.

ORAU Awards Area Schools $25,000 in Education Grants
ORAU recently presented checks totaling $25,000 to 15 area school programs. The grants help local teachers fund their math and science educational projects and supplies. Since the education grant program's inception in 2002, ORAU has awarded close to $125,000 to Anderson County schools.

ORAU Sponsors 7th Annual Graduate School Fair
After presenting their summer research at a day-long poster session, more than 100 young scientists had the chance to meet with representatives from 19 colleges and universities about graduate school opportunities.

ORAU Continues Support for New Oak Ridge High School
ORAU recently made another payment toward its $1 million contribution to help construct a new high school in the city of Oak Ridge.

ORAU Employees Assist ADFAC with School Supplies Distribution
For the seventh straight year, ORAU employees are helping families in need by providing back-to-school school supplies through the Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties (ADFAC) program. ORAU donated approximately $3,000 in school supplies, and 32 employees volunteered their time at the organization's distribution center.

ORAU Hosts Tuskegee Students/Faculty Visit to ORNL
A group of science students and professors from Tuskegee University traveled to Oak Ridge National Laboratory to get a first-hand look at the lab's facilities and learn about the kinds of research programs available to them.

Students Immersed in Technology
An elite group of Tennessee high school students spent a day recently in Oak Ridge where they visited and learned more about the Spallation Neutron Source. The event was part of the two-week President's Academy on Emerging Technologies, co-sponsored by ORAU, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and BWXT Y-12.

ORAU Specialist Provides Crisis Lessons to Area Churches
A crisis can occur anywhere—even in the holiest of places. As an act of community service, ORAU recently sponsored the session "Crisis Communication for Church Ministries and Church-Affiliated Organizations."

ORCAS Conducts Workshops on the Future of Energy in Appalachia
On behalf of the Appalachian Regional Commission, the ORAU-supported Oak Ridge Center for Advanced Studies is conducting three workshops about the future of energy in Appalachia.

ORAU Sending Nine Young Scientists to Meet Nobel Laureates
ORAU is sponsoring nine outstanding graduate research participants to attend the 56th Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates and Students in Lindau, Germany.

Powe Award Winners Announced
As an investment in the future of science education, ORAU has made its annual selection of Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award winners. For the academic year 2006-2007, ORAU has chosen 25 junior faculty from its member institutions.
