Six Area Students Awarded Martin Luther King Scholarships

OAK RIDGE, TENN—Six recent high school graduates from Oak Ridge and Knoxville have each received a Martin Luther King, Jr. “I Have a Dream” Scholarship from the Oak Ridge Community MLK Celebration Committee. The recipients are recognized for their commitment to education and community.

Each of the following graduates will receive $1000 toward tuition to attend the university of his or her choice:

The Oak Ridge Community MLK Celebration Committee, in collaboration with Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), formed the scholarship fund in 1999 with hopes of making students’ dreams become realities. Committee members wanted to reach students who would pursue associate, baccalaureate, vocational, or other higher education degrees or certificates that would help them become valuable and contributing members of their communities. The committee hosted a banquet in January to fund the scholarships.

“We had some excellent applicants and we had very good support from the Oak Ridge community,” said Mitchell. “Everybody just kind of comes together—the schools, churches, sororities, businesses—and it turns out really well.”

Corporate sponsors of the scholarship are Bechtel Jacobs, BNFL, ORAU, ORNL Federal Credit Union, Wachenhut Services, Dee Mitchell & Associates, Information International Associates, K-25 Federal Credit Union, and Y-12 Federal Credit Union.

Scholarship committee members are E. Anthony Allen, Oak Valley Baptist church; Arthur Nelson, former member of the Anderson County Board of Education; Delores Mitchell, Millette Smart, and Jim Drewry, and Hattie Preston, ORAU; Barbara Horton, Wachenhut Services; Mary Alice Douglas, Bechtel Jacobs; and Sandy Burchfield, Garden Plaza.
