Sigelman Elected to Leadership Position on ORAU Council

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. –Carol Kimball Sigelman, Associate Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies and Professor of Psychology at George Washington University, was elected Vice Chair of the Council of Sponsoring Institutions for Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU). ORAU is governed by its Council of Sponsoring Institutions who elect the Board of Directors to manage the property and affairs of the corporation. Sigelman will also serve on the Board of Directors.

Established in 1946, ORAU is a consortium of 88 doctoral-granting colleges and universities that carries out active programs with and for its members. These include efforts to increase member university involvement in corporate work initiatives, programs that facilitate interactions between senior industrial scientists and faculty and students at member institutions, and awards to junior faculty members at member universities.

Sigelman has been the Associate Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies and Professor of Psychology at George Washington University since 1996.

Prior to her current position, Sigelman held positions at the University of Arizona, Eastern Kentucky University, and Texas Tech University. While at the University of Arizona, she launched and directed a developmental psychology program. At Texas Tech University, she was Director of Research at a research and training center in mental retardation.

Sigelman has written six books and produced several monographs and edited works. She also authors a life span human development textbook. She has also authored a broad array of peer-reviewed publications in the areas of Child Development, Social Psychology/Adult Social Cognition, Communication Development and Behavior, and Developmental Disabilities/Rehabilitation, as well as a host of conference papers, presentations, and technical reports.

Sigelman earned her masters in English and doctorate in Psychology and English from George Peabody College (now Vanderbilt University) and graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Carleton College.

A private, not-for-profit corporation, ORAU also manages and operates the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) for the U.S. Department of Energy. ORISE focuses on scientific initiatives to research health risks from occupational hazards, assess environmental cleanup, respond to radiation medical emergencies, support national security and emergency preparedness, and educate the next generation of scientists.
