Patel Elected to ORAU Board of Directors
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. –Gordhan L. Patel, Vice President for Research and Associate Provost at the University of Georgia, was elected to the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) Board of Directors at the 58th annual meeting of the ORAU Council of Sponsoring Institutions in Atlanta, Georgia. The board manages the property and affairs of ORAU for its membership.
Established in 1946, ORAU is a consortium of 88 doctoral-granting colleges and universities that carries out active programs with and for its members. These include efforts to increase member university involvement in corporate work initiatives, programs that facilitate interactions between senior industrial scientists and faculty and students at member institutions, and awards to junior faculty members at member universities.
After three years service as instructor and research associate at the State University of New York at Buffalo, Patel joined the faculty of the University of Georgia, where he holds the academic rank of Professor of Cellular Biology and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He served as head of the Department of Zoology from 1981 to 1989 and as Dean of the Graduate School from 1989 to 2002. Since 2001, he has been serving as the Vice President for Research and Associate Provost.
Patel has been a member of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities Council since 2001. His service on review and advisory boards is extensive and includes the Graduate Record Exam Board Educational Testing Services (2001 - present), Council of Graduate Schools' Board of Directors (1995 - 2000), and the Educational Design Services' Board for the Teachers of English as a Foreign Language. His research projects have been supported by organizations such as the National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, and American Cancer Society.
Patel earned his master’s and doctorate degrees from Washington University in Saint Louis. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Sigma Xi, American Society of Cell Biology, New York Academy of Sciences, and International Cell Cycle Society and is listed in the International Who’s Who in Education and American Men and Women in Science.
A private, not-for-profit corporation, ORAU also manages and operates the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) for the U.S. Department of Energy. ORISE focuses on scientific initiatives to research health risks from occupational hazards, assess environmental cleanup, respond to radiation medical emergencies, support national security and emergency preparedness, and educate the next generation of scientists.
