ORAU Awards $29,000 in Education Grants to Local Schools
OAK RIDGE , Tenn.—Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) awarded more than $29,000 in grants to 16 education programs in 14 local schools during a reception Monday evening.
About 60 people attended the reception at ORAU’s Pollard Technology Conference Center in Oak Ridge as teachers and administrators enthusiastically accepted their grants.
“The reception is a great opportunity to recognize some outstanding teachers in the community who are bringing innovation and academic excellence to their classrooms,” Townsend said. “A large part of the ORAU mission is to support and enhance education,” he added.
Several months ago, ORAU solicited proposals from teachers throughout the local area, and winning proposals were chosen on a competitive basis.
The recipients and grant amounts were:
- Andersonville Elementary School, $3,200, to expand their computer lab by adding science trade books and lab equipment.
- Clinton City Schools, $3,400, to enhance the Higher Order Thinking Skills for Science (HOTSS) program.
- Clinton High School, $800, for an articulated skeleton for the anatomy and physiology lab.
- Clinton Police Department, $500, to purchase instructional materials for forensic science classes to be taught at Clinton Middle School .
- Dutch Valley Elementary School, $2,750, for a mobile computer lab.
- Grand Oaks Elementary School, $850, for hands-on science and math experiments.
- Jefferson Middle School, $500, to purchase a digital camera for a computer applications course.
- Lake City Middle School, $2,600, to purchase “Energy, Machines, and Motions: Promoting Inquiry-Based Learning in the Science Classroom.”
- Norris Elementary School, $500, for adding non-fiction science books to the Literacy Collaborative Library.
- Norwood Elementary School, $2,500, to update science lab equipment.
- Oak Ridge High School, $500, to introduce chess to improve skills that promote academic success. Also awarded $1,500 for Algebra's Cool DVD Supplemental Algebra Curriculum.
- South Clinton Elementary School, $2,800, for a mobile science lab
- Willow Brook Elementary School, $2,500, to purchase a supply of manipulatives and equipment for a mathematics lab.
- Woodland Elementary School, $3,000, to make improvements in the Science Center . Also awarded to install education software for math curriculum in every classroom, the computer lab, and the media center.
ORAU awarded $13,660 in educational grants to Anderson County Schools, $6,200 to Clinton City Schools, and $9,290 to Oak Ridge City Schools during a reception Monday evening. Overall, ORAU awarded more than $29,000 in educational grants to 14 schools in Anderson County, Clinton, and Oak Ridge.
