McInerney Joins ORAU as Technical Director for Surveillance Programs
OAK RIDGE, Tenn.—Dr. John R. McInerney, M.D. recently joined Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) as a technical director for surveillance programs. He brings more than 30 years of experience in occupational, emergency, and sports medicine.
In his new position, located in ORAU’s Arvada, Colo., office, McInerney will direct and coordinate all medical aspects of the National Supplemental Screening Program (NSSP), a health screening program for former U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) workers, as well as for DOE’s Beryllium Vendor Surveillance Program.
“Dr. McInerney is a valuable addition to NSSP,” said NSSP Program Director Dr. Donna Cragle. “He has excellent first-hand knowledge of occupational medicine issues among workers in the DOE complex, as well as experience with surveillance for beryllium sensitization and disease.”
In addition to his leadership role with NSSP, McInerney will monitor the work of physicians at clinics providing medical testing for NSSP and will review beryllium lymphocyte proliferation tests that are performed for participants in NSSP and the Beryllium Vendor Surveillance Program. McInerney will be responsible for notifying participants of urgent findings and talking with those who need more information about medical testing.

McInerney began undergraduate coursework in biology at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, and earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. McInerney most recently served seven years as site occupational medical director for Computer Sciences Corporation (formerly DynCorp) in Rocky Flats, Colo., where he implemented the Chronic Beryllium Disease Prevention Program and worked closely with industrial hygiene, safety, management, and labor departments concerning medical treatment and safe job placement. McInerney also maintained a private medical practice for 13 years that provided family and urgent care, as well as occupational medicine to the Golden, Colo., community.
