Toohey Elected to National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements
OAK RIDGE, Tenn.—Richard E. Toohey, ORAU’s director of dose reconstruction programs and senior science advisor for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Dose Reconstruction Project, was recently elected to the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) at its annual meeting in Washington, D.C. Established by Congress in 1964, the NCRP's mission is to help disseminate information and research data about radiation exposure and protection guidelines in the public interest.
Nominated for his dose reconstruction expertise, Toohey joined former ORAU employees, William Burr and William Mills, as only the third employee from the company ever to serve on the Council. The honor places Toohey in the company of what is considered to be the top 100 experts in the field of radiation protection.
“It's a tremendous honor to be elected to the council,” explained Toohey. “I have great respect for the NCRP, and I hope to make significant contributions to the council’s activities relating to the scientific basis and reliability of dose reconstruction.” Toohey will serve a six-year term in which he will be responsible for reviewing draft NCRP reports and serving on internal committees. He is currently a member of three NCRP scientific committees, one of which is completing a report on a biokinetic model for contaminated wounds; a second that is drafting a report on uncertainty in internal dose estimates; and a third newly-formed committee that will prepare a report on the basic principles of dose reconstruction.
