A certified health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, Riley brings expertise in key areas of applied health physics, including decommissioning, dose assessments and radiation measurements. In his new position, Riley will work on a variety of technical health physics projects including radiation measurement systems, dose assessments, instrumentation, audit support, investigational studies, and support of technologies and training for the nuclear fuel cycle. In addition, he will assist with lectures and laboratory exercises with ORAU’s Professional Training Program.

ORAU’s program provides environmental assessments and health physics services in a broad and diverse array of areas, such as audits of radiological facilities, dose modeling to support site release criteria, and radiation measurements using in situ gamma spectrometry. The program also manages a radiochemistry laboratory and teaches an average of 25 radiation training courses each year.

"We are very pleased that Bill Riley has joined our health physics team at ORAU and eagerly anticipate his immediate contributions to some of our most challenging projects," said Eric Abelquist, director of ORAU’s Independent Environmental Assessment and Verification program.

Prior to joining ORAU, Riley worked for Nuclear Fuel Services’ Isotek Systems LLC as radiological control manager on the uranium-233 downblending and disposition project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In that position, he was responsible for developing Isotek’s radiation protection program and performed radiological safety reviews of the design of the facility.

"I am very grateful to join ORAU’s staff of qualified heath physicists," said Riley. "I look forward to the technical challenge and the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of health physics projects."

Riley graduated from Purdue University with bachelor’s degrees in health physics and industrial hygiene. He later earned a master’s degree in health physics from Purdue University. Riley is a member of the Health Physics Society.

Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) is a university consortium leveraging the scientific strength of 98 major research institutions to advance science and education by partnering with national laboratories, government agencies, and private industry. ORAU manages the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for the U.S. Department of Energy.
