OAK RIDGE, Tenn.—Sarah Roberts was recently promoted to associate director of Oak Ridge Associated Universities’ (ORAU) Independent Environmental Assessment and Verification programs.

In her new position, Roberts will perform business development activities and serve as a technical expert on issues related to health physics and radiological surveys. The position will also require Roberts to ensure that appropriate procedures for surveys, laboratory analyses, quality, and health and safety have been implemented, as well as assist with the overall administration and technical direction of the ORAU’s environmental assessment and verification activities.

Roberts joined ORAU in 2005 and was promoted to survey projects manager in 2007, where she was responsible for managing a team of health physicists and survey technicians who performed radiological surveys to verify the remediation efforts at decontamination and decommissioning projects across the United States. She also previously served as a project leader whose main responsibilities included planning, implementing and managing radiological and chemical surveys, as well as verification of recently remediated sites managed by the U.S. Department of Energy and licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Roberts, a certified health physicist with the American Board of Health Physics, earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Ohio University and a master’s degree in health physics from Colorado State University.

ORAU is a university consortium leveraging the scientific strength of 99 major research institutions to advance science and education by partnering with national laboratories, government agencies and private industry. ORAU manages the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for the U.S. Department of Energy.
