Partnerships for Innovation
Oak Ridge Associated Universities' (ORAU) Beryllium Laboratory gained 10 new customers during fiscal year 2008, including the University of Iowa and the U.S. Department of Energy's Savannah River Site (SRS).
“With the 10 new additions, the total number of customers for the lab is now 19,” said Donna Cragle, vice president and director of ORAU’s occupational exposure and worker health programs.
These tests can detect whether a worker is sensitized to beryllium and may help identify workers who are at risk for developing chronic beryllium disease.
ORAU signed a three-year contract with SRS to perform approximately 400 BeLPTs in 2008 with an option to perform the same work for two years thereafter, Cragle explained.
The University of Iowa work will entail performing BeLPTs for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and former Ames Laboratory personnel.
The University of Iowa and the Savannah River Site are among the newest customers of the ORAU Beryllium Laboratory.
