Derek Hagemeyer of Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) represented the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) at the annual meeting of the Information System on Occupational Exposure (ISOE) program held in Paris, France, during the summer of 2008.
Pictured at the city of Versailles, a suburb of Paris, France, Derek Hagemeyer of ORAU’s OEWH program attended a meeting of the Information System on Occupational Exposure (ISOE). ISOE is an international organization with the mission of reducing the occupational radiation exposure of nuclear power plant workers. He went to the meeting to share his expertise in collecting and analyzing occupational radiation exposure data.
The ISOE provides a worldwide information exchange system to improve the radiological protection of workers in nuclear power plants and the implementation of the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) philosophy. The ISOE has 29 member countries, with data on a total of 480 nuclear power plants around the world.
Representatives from power companies, as well as nuclear regulatory organizations of each country participate in the ISOE committee, which has four technical centers in the world.
Hagemeyer explained that he serves at the direction of the NRC in a technical advisory role for the Working Group on Data Analysis (WGDA) of ISOE based on his experience collecting and analyzing occupational radiation exposure data for the NRC and the U.S. Department of Energy.
The contract with the NRC states that ORAU will send a representative to the annual ISOE WGDA meeting, so Hagemeyer plans to return for future meetings.
"The objectives of the ISOE are consistent with the NRC’s objectives in the dissemination of information and the reduction of occupational radiation exposure," Hagemeyer said. "Our experiences in these areas were valuable additions to the WGDA meetings. Our involvement heightens the visibility of ORAU on the international stage."
