This medallion (2" diameter) was produced in 1971 to commemorate the
25th anniversary of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).

The back of the medallion (photo above left) shows an Erlenmeyer flask in
the center to symbolize scientific research, a space probe in the upper
left, a caduceus in the upper right to symbolize the medical
applications of radioisotopes, a nuclear powered submarine in the lower
left, and a nuclear power plant in the lower right.
In essence, the AEC was created in 1946 to assume the responsibility for managing atomic energy. Previously, that responsibility had belonged to the US Army, and General Groves in particular. Regarding this transfer of power, Groves described his position as being a mother hen watching strangers take all her chicks. References The New World.
