ORAU Provides 24/7 Medical Response to Radiation Emergencies Around the World

Radiation emergency response team preparing for deployment

Through our contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, ORAU maintains 24/7 emergency response teams capable of on-site medical and health physics consultation on radiation accidents worldwide as a part of the Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site (REAC/TS).

We have developed an interdisciplinary radiation emergency medical response approach that integrates medicine with health physics. This enables rapid radiation dose assessment, radiological and medical triage, diagnosis, and medical management of radiation incidents.

Our experienced response teams, which consist of a physician, nurse/paramedic, and a health physicist, are furnished with equipment that can be transported to a site or used at our unique facility in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

The staff is also equipped to administer radiation countermeasure drugs and perform:

  • medical and radiological triage
  • decontamination
  • diagnostic and prognostic assessments of radiation-induced injuries
  • biological and radiological dose estimates
