Radiation Emergency Medicine

Success Stories

Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) has worked to build an unmatched reputation in training and the medical management of radiation emergencies for more than 30 years.

Our qualified staff provides hands-on continuing medical education training and through an interdisciplinary radiation emergency medical response approach, we maintain around-the-clock emergency response teams capable of providing medical and health physics consultation on radiation accidents worldwide.

Some of our most recent training and emergency response successes include:

ORAU Collaborates with UT, ACMT to Offer New Training Course

ORAU and the American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT) collaborated to offer an awareness-level course on emergency medical response to exposures from toxic chemical and radiological materials at the University of Tennessee.

ORAU’s Global Partnerships Strengthen International Preparedness for Radiological Emergencies

ORAU is strengthening radiation emergency medical response around the globe by establish international partnerships through education, exercises, and conferences.

CBL Takes Part in National Counterterrorism Preparedness Exercise

ORAU’s Cytogenetic Biodosimetry Laboratory (CBL) tested for the first time its capability to receive and process blood samples and calculate radiation doses for “victims” during a full-scale emergency management exercise.

ORAU Provides Radiation Expertise in NASA Launch Prep

ORAU experts educated emergency personnel in at least five hospitals on external and internal decontamination and providing technical review and comments on NASA planning documents.

Hiroshima Fallout Expert Visits Cytogenetic Biodosimetry Laboratory

Dr. Akio Awa, widely considered to have performed the most extensive radiation cytogenetic population studies in the world, visited ORAU to work along side Drs. Gordon Livingston and Mark Jenkins in the Cytogenetic Biodosimetry Laboratory (CBL) analyzing blood cultures and plotting chromosomes.

Visiting ORAU Fellow Will Lead the Way for Philippine Radiation Emergency Medical Response

Dr. Emma Cancino of the Philippines participanted in three courses focusing on radiation emergency medicine. Although the country has never had a radiation-related accident, Cancino believes pursuing radiation emergency medical response education can only serve to encourage and maintain her country’s safe record.

First Person in Qatar Trained in Radiation Accident Response

Dr. Adel Al-Naimi spent six weeks with ORAU at the Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site (REAC/TS) to help prepare his home country of Qatar in the event of a radiation incident.
