RIA Writing Group 2005
10-11 September 2005
RIA Users Organization Meeting
Detroit Metro Airport (DTW)
Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport Hotel

The National Research Council (NRC) was asked to make a review of RIA. A committee appointed by NRC would carry out a thorough independent assessment of the importance to the nation of the science agenda for RIA. In preparing its report, the committee would address the role that RIA would play in the future of nuclear physics, considering the field broadly, but placing emphasis on its potential scientific impact on nuclear structure, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental symmetries, stockpile stewardship and other national security areas, and future availability of scientific and technical personnel. The need for such an accelerator would be addressed in the context of international efforts in this area. The NRC report is supposed to be finalized by October 2006.

In preparation for the review we would like to prepare a series of short documents that outline the

  • scientific justification,
  • current status of the design,
  • design options,
  • international context,
  • applications, and
  • education and workforce.

For the most part, the material for these documents can be taken or updated from previous reports. In order to prepare the documents we would like to have a one-day organizational meeting. At the meeting we will update participants on the status RIA, discuss the philosophy and scope of the documents for the NRC, the main arguments we would like to develop, and our overall approach to the review. Participation from members of the RIA community is essential for preparation for the review.

The meeting will begin at 3:00 pm in order to allow participants to arrive Saturday morning. The meeting will end by noon on Sunday.

The meeting hotel is connected directly to the DTW McNamara terminal. Participants arriving on Northwest Airlines can walk from their gate to the hotel. Those arriving on other airlines can take a short shuttle ride to the hotel. Dinner on Saturday, September 10, and breakfast on Sunday, September 11, will be provided.
