Program
The summer school has three main components. The mornings will be devoted to lectures covering broad topics in both the experimental and theoretical physics of nuclei far from stability.
| Lecturer | Topic | Lecture Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Daniel Bazin Michigan State University |
Nuclear Reactions (Experiment) |
1, 2, 3 (pdf) |
| Mike Carpenter Argonne National Laboratory |
Nuclear Structure (Experiment) |
1, 2 (ppt) |
| Art Champagne University of North Carolina |
Nuclear Astrophysics (Experiment) |
1, 2, 3 (ppt) |
|
Thomas Papenbrock Oak Ridge National Laboratory |
Nuclear Structure (Theory) |
1, 2, 3 (pdf) |
| Brad Sherrill Michigan State University |
Rare Isotope Accelerator Facility | 1, 2 (pdf/ppt) |
| Ian Towner Queens University |
Universality of the Weak Interaction |
1 (pdf) |
| John Hardy Texas A&M University | Precision Measurements | 1, 2 (pdf) |
Short one-hour lectures will focus on specific areas of R&D leading towards RIA and the instrumentation and techniques which are being developed for use at RIA. These talks will complement the hands-on activities taking place in the afternoons.
| Lecturer | Topic | Lecture Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Raph Hix Oak Ridge National Laboratory |
Super Novae (Theory) |
1 (pdf) |
| David Schultz | Radioactive Ion Beam production using Lasers | 1 (pdf) |
| Dan Stracener | Radioactive Ion Beam Production using ISOL Techniques | 1 (pdf) |
The hands-on activities will take place at the HRIBF and will illustrate the equipment and experimental techniques which will be used at RIA. Students will be placed in small groups and will have the opportunity to do 5 of the activities.
| Activity | Leader |
|---|---|
| ISOL Radioactive Ion Beam Production using Tandem Beams | Stracener/Batchelder |
| Ion Source Beam Emittance | Liu |
| Laser Photodissociation of Ions in Mixed-species Beams
to Produce Enhanced Purity Beams |
Beene/Havener |
| Microchannel plates and Time-of-flight techniques | Liang/Varner |
| Measurements with the HRIBF windowless gas target | Blackmon/Smith/Bardayan |
| Digital Signal Processing | Rykaczewski/Grzywacz |
| Digital Signal Processing 2 | Radford/Yu |
| Theory | Nazarewicz/Dobaczewski |
Participants are encouraged to present their ongoing research projects in a series of short oral or poster presentations. These presentations were held each evening after dinner.
A rafting trip down the Ocoee River was held on Saturday July 22. Photographs from the trip as well as the entire school are available.
