Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Oak Ridge, TN

ORNL12-17-MSTD

Project Description:

The Materials Science and Technology Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a candidate for a postdoctoral research associate position for its materials research program supporting the development of microscale mechanical testing. The selected candidate will work on the characterization of the physical and mechanical properties of functional ceramics and alloys and investigate the role of microstructure on their properties.  Project will include development of new tools and instrumentation for the determination of physical and mechanical properties of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) constituents, including thin electrode and electrolyte layers.

The position is for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year upon satisfactory performance and continuation of funding.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in materials science and engineering or a related field with a strong background in thermomechanical characterization of materials and devices. Experience in small scale mechanical testing of materials is highly desirable. Knowledge of finite element modeling is a plus. The applicant must have demonstrated abilities in problem solving, collaborative research, and excellent communication skills.

Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
