The USDA- Foreign Animal Disease Research Unit (FADRU) is located at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC) in Orient Point, New York. Plum Island is located off the eastern tip of Long Island, requiring daily travel by government ferry from either Orient Pt., NY or Old Saybrook, CT.
Project Description:
Incumbent will carry out all aspects of the pathology-based effort including proposed study design/development, in vivo experiments in cattle, necropsies, tissue collection, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and reporting of findings. Work will be done under the supervision of a DACVP-certified pathologist.
This research project could be an opportunity for a post-doctoral fellowship or a Ph.D. project. Fellowship stipend will be commensurate with education and training, but is expected to be in the range of $50-$60K per annum. Fellowship appointments are made for one-year periods but this project is planned and funded for 2 years. Extension beyond that period is possible, but dependent upon external funding sources. Selection is dependent on successful security clearance process.
Some of the work will be carried out in BioSafety Level 3 (BSL-3) containment in modern, well equipped laboratory space. While selectee will not enter in an employment relationship with USDA or any other agency, this position requires the selectee to undergo a pre-employment check and a full background investigation. Any offer made is considered a tentative offer pending the outcome of the pre-employment check. Retention in the position is based upon a favorable adjudication of the background investigation. Incumbent may be required to be immunized against diseases being studied at the facility which are transmittable to humans.
Qualifications:
A two year fellowship in foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine development is available for a veterinarian with at least one year of advanced training in anatomic pathology. DACVP-eligibility or certification is desirable. The fellow will participate in a multidisciplinary effort to characterize and improve recombinant FMD vaccines.
