Visiting Industrial Scholars Program

ORAU Promotes Collaborative Research Opportunities Between Students and Industrial Scientists

The Visiting Industrial Scholar Program helps support visits by senior industrial scientists to Oak Ridge Associated Universities' (ORAU) member institutions. The primary goal of the program is to foster interactions between faculty and students at member institutions and industrial scientists. The form of the interaction is left to the individual institution: seminars, lectures, cooperative project development, etc.

Funding is provided exclusively from non-federal monies by ORAU and as such is limited only by the terms of the agreement between ORAU and the recipient.

Program Guidelines

  • The grant must be requested by an ORAU member institution for a visit during the 2008-2009 academic year.
  • A copy of the application must be signed by the ORAU Councilor or Campus Representative and faxed to ORAU before application can be reviewed.
  • Institutions customarily invite Ph.D.-/M.D.-level senior industrial scientists.
  • The grant of $600 is to be used for expenses related to the on-campus visit of an industrial scientist.
  • Only one award will be made per institution per academic year.
  • There will be only one application cycle for the 2008-2009 academic year.
  • After a visit, please send a one-page summary of the outcomes of the visit including any presentations made, visits with students, other benefits, and plans for future activities.

Deadlines and Review

Applications were due Dec. 12, 2008; awards for 2007/2008 are listed below.

Applications are reviewed by ORAU senior staff. Funds are awarded based on the merit of the proposed activity, including the number and type of on-campus activities; the number of students and faculty involved; the purpose of the visit; and the credentials of the scholar.
