ORAU Events Sponsorship Program

Up to $4,000 can be requested to support events which involve participants from more than one ORAU institution. Two Calls for Proposals will be issued each year. Typical events might include visits to an ORAU institution by a renowned speaker, conferences or workshops with a focused theme, or a technology transfer/business plan competition.

Criteria for decisions to award Event Sponsorship grants include:

  • Potential engagement of others, especially students
  • Probability of a long-term collaboration
  • New or enhanced collaboration (proposed partners have no strong current ties)
  • Well-defined outcome(s), such as a proposal to an identified opportunity, a white paper in anticipation of future funding, or a publication as a result of data collected during the event.
  • Preference will be given to events in STEM disciplines.

How to apply

In an effort to make the application process easier and give the ORAU councilors more flexibility and control, we have revised the submission process, which is as follows:

  1. The forms and process are no longer Web-based. The application form is now a Microsoft Word document.
Internet Explorer users: To download the Microsoft Word templates listed below, right-click on the link and choose "Save Target As..." to save a copy to your computer.
  2. At his/her discretion, each councilor will distribute the forms to appropriate staff and faculty. The councilor is responsible for submitting the applications by the deadline.
  3. The councilor will receive all applications. Applications not submitted through the councilor will not be accepted.
  4. Once the university determines which application will be submitted, the councilor will convert the application to PDF format and forward it to ORAU.

  • Applications must be submitted by the Councilor at any ORAU institution in good standing (i.e. membership fees and required reports for existing award programs are current).
  • Applications are considered on an ORAU Fiscal Year basis (October 1 – September 30), with two award cycles.
    • Applications received by September 1st will be for events occurring between October 1st and May 31st.
    • Applications received by March 1st will be for events occurring between April 1st and September 30th.
  • Each ORAU institution may submit one application per ORAU’s fiscal year.
    • Awardees of the first cycle may not apply for the second cycle.
    • Awardees of the second cycle may apply for the next fiscal year’s first cycle.
  • A representative from ORAU must be invited to the event and will attend, if possible.

Please note that funding must be awarded prior to the event, and we conduct two Calls for Proposals. The application schedule is based on ORAU’s fiscal year (Oct. 1 - Sept. 30).

  • If the event will take place between Oct. 1 and May 31 of the following year, applications are due by Sept. 1.
  • If the event will take place between April 1 and Sept. 30, applications are due by March 1.

Funding source

Funding is provided exclusively from non-federal monies by ORAU.

Funding restrictions

  • ORAU does not allow overhead charges or indirect costs on the award from ORAU.
  • The event must be held by September 30 (the end of ORAU’s fiscal year.)

A report must be submitted within 30 days following the event documenting participation and outcomes.
