#ExtremeTeacher prize is game-changer for Athens math intervention teacher

#ExtremeTeacher prize is game-changer for Athens math intervention teacher
Tabitha Rue

Tabitha Rue is an Extreme Teacher.

Rue was hired two months ago as a math intervention specialist at E.K. Baker Elementary School, a small school located in rural Athens, Tenn.

As a math intervention specialist, Rue helps students improve their scores on state math tests. She works with 24 students a day in eight small groups that range in size from two to six. Because the school is at capacity, Rue doesn’t teach in a classroom. Rather, she has dedicated space in the school’s teacher lounge.

“This position is brand new, so we have no resources in here,” she said.

Principal Amy Bohannon tried to find laptops for Rue’s students. After sending an email to the school’s teachers, she secured just one, and it only works while plugged into the wall.

Rue received five brand-new HP Chromebooks as the December winner of ORAU’s #ExtremeTeacher contest. They could not have come at a better time.

“This is a game-changer for me to have these to be able to use in my small groups,” Rue said.

ORAU launched #ExtremeTeacher in October 2017 to complement Extreme Classroom Makeover, ORAU’s annual program that awards $25,000 in new technology to a winning STEM teacher located within 50 miles of Oak Ridge. Learn more or enter the Extreme Classroom Makeover.
