DOE has again awarded the “Star of Excellence” to ORISE for achieving an “outstanding level of performance in meeting established safety and health goals.”

OAK RIDGE, Tenn.—At a recent meeting of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) in San Antonio, Texas, DOE awarded ORISE the “Star of Excellence.” This was the fourth consecutive year that ORISE has earned this distinction.

The “Star of Excellence” award signifies that ORISE has sustained an outstanding level of performance in meeting established safety and health goals. The award also reflects the fact that ORISE has actively mentored other companies and achieved an injury and illness rate significantly below the national average of similar businesses and operations.

“The key to ORISE’s strength is its people, and job one is protecting their safety and health and the environment,” said Andy Page, president of Oak Ridge Associated Universities, which manages ORISE for DOE. “That’s what makes receiving the ‘Star of Excellence’ so exciting. The achievement reflects that our awareness and practices are where they should be and that we are committed to sustaining very high standards.”

In 2008, ORISE was also one of only six DOE sites across the U.S. to be named a Legacy of Stars site. This award is given to VPP member companies that have received the “Star of Excellence” for three consecutive years. ORISE is now in year two of another three-year cycle to strive to earn the Legacy of Stars site designation again.

ORISE is a U.S. Department of Energy institute focusing on scientific initiatives to research health risks from occupational hazards, assess environmental cleanup, respond to radiation medical emergencies, support national security and emergency preparedness, and educate the next generation of scientists.
