OAK RIDGE, Tenn.—Career center staff representing 21 colleges and universities were onsite at Oak Ridge National Laboratory Tuesday, July 12, for the first ever Career Center Discovery Event. The opportunity, which was co-hosted by ORNL and Oak Ridge Associated Universities, was open to college and university career center employees who are interested in learning more about research opportunities at the lab that they can then share with students at their schools. Attendees got the chance to visit some of the lab’s 10 user facilities and toured the historic Graphite Reactor (pictured above). Designated as a historic landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1966 and by the American Nuclear Society in 1992, the Graphite Reactor was a pilot facility for the production of plutonium during the World War II Manhattan Project and then became a pioneering facility for the production of radioisotopes and early neutron-scattering experiments. Items on display at the Graphite Reactor include a representation of fuel rods being loaded into the reactor.
