OAK RIDGE, Tenn.—Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) is pleased to announce the appointment of Martin D. Barrie, J.D., Ph.D. to the position of senior scientist in epidemiology. Barrie joins ORAU with more than 30 years of diverse education and experience that includes occupational and environmental epidemiology, industrial hygiene and legal expertise.
"Martin brings extensive knowledge across many areas of our business and is already established as a highly sought-after expert," said Donna Cragle, Ph.D. and ORAU vice president. "His experience and skills dovetail well with the proficiencies of our team and adds additional bench strength in several areas, specifically our epidemiology program."
Barrie earned his doctorate in community health sciences in 2003, with specialization in epidemiology and exposure assessment, and received his master's degree in environmental sciences in 1982, with specialization in industrial hygiene and genetic toxicology. Both degrees were earned from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health. He also earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1987 from South Texas College of Law in Houston.
Barrie has worked for international oil, gas and chemical companies developing and managing industrial hygiene programs and conducting occupational and environmental risk assessments for workers and the public. He also has provided oversight for DOE for the epidemiologic investigation of former workers' beryllium exposure and disease risk. He has international experience in regulatory compliance having worked with the several organizations including the World Health Organization and the http://www.worldbank.org/.
Barrie joins ORAU from Exponent, Inc., where he worked as a senior managing scientist and also directed the company's operations in Saudi Arabia. He is also an assistant professor (adjunct) at the University of Texas Health Science Center, School of Public Health in Houston. Barrie is a member of the American College of Epidemiology the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology, and the American Industrial Hygiene Association.
Barrie resides in Walland, Tenn., and works for ORAU in its Oak Ridge, Tenn. offices.
